The Big Climb – Seattle Dentist Patient Raises Money for LLS

Avatar for Vicki Fidler by Vicki Fidler

We here at Fidler on the Tooth wanted to give a big shout out to one of our patients, Jessica, for taking on a big challenge by raising money for such a good cause- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or LLS.  She and her team, Team Panda, will be doing the Big Climb on Sunday, March 20, 2016.

We had Jessica answer some questions about this great event.

What are you doing to prepare for the Big Climb?

In the past, when preparing for the climb, I was working at The Seattle Gym in Laurelhurst- so I had access to plenty of stair-climbing machines and training equipment. This year, The Big Climb sort of snuck up on me! I actually have not climbed stairs for exercise as much as function lately, so I am pretty nervous about it this year.

Are you part of a team and what is your goal?

I am part of a team, we’re called Team Panda; as for a goal… We are all young, just-out-of-college kids from across the state. Our peers can’t donate much and we know money is tight, so we don’t shoot for the moon in any sense. We just want to help in any way possible- we know everyone can’t donate money, so we have encouraged quite a few other runners, as well as volunteers for the program.

Do you register for it every year and if so, how long have you been doing it?

This is my third year doing the Big Climb with Team Panda.

Why did you choose this organization?

A close college friend of mine developed a lymphomatic disorder and the doctors have been and still are struggling to figure out the reasons, the causes, and how to help him. Research is the first step and the LLS has done an amazing job in raising money for research. –And regardless of that, it is a great cause and a good challenge.

“Every day, more than 347 LLS sponsored researchers come closer to the goal of finding a cure for leukemia and related blood cancers. Locally, LLS funds 10 researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of Washington Medical Center to the tune of $3.2 million. Your support and commitment to the mission of LLS enables us to continue this important work of saving lives and aids us in our ability to reach patients in our community.”

What is the best part about joining the Big Climb?

Often when I receive a donation, I receive a story. Each year we add more and more people to our list to climb for.

Do you plan on registering for any other events this year?

Yes, I am doing the Warrior Dash as a St. Jude’s Warrior for the 2nd year in a row, and I will be joining my mom for her 5th and my 1st Susan G Koman 3-day, for her Cancer-free-aversary- then for a personal challenge, I have the Rock-and-Roll Marathon and as a challenge to my boyfriend who hates running, the Portage Bay 10k.

What is one fun fact about you?

Hahaha, I guess you could say I also hate running! I just recognize the health benefits, enjoy personal challenges, and there are few ways to raise money for good causes from the couch.
